My name is Trish Haugrud and I am currently completing my first year of teaching. This school year, I am teaching grade 5 and grade 7 at a school that is inquiry based, technology enhanced, and outdoor education focused. I graduated from the University of Lethbridge with a combined B.Sc/B.Ed degree and a major in mathematics education. I have been living in Calgary for the majority of my years, except for my first year of life which was in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. I have an exceptionally large family in which a portion lives in Calgary, and the other in Oakville, Ontario. I believe my Dad fostered my interest in outdoor activities, as he had me swimming and skiing as soon as I could stand on my own two feet. I now enjoy snowboarding, hiking, camping, and attempting new activities. Another avid interest of mine includes travelling. After much saving, about five years ago, I spent some time travelling around Australia, New Zealand, and Asia. I can't wait to explore even more of this beautiful world. How did I end up as a teacher? I have always had a strong passion for those younger than myself. I find it truly fascinating to watch students grow and mature as they find their place in this world. Knowing that their experiences and education factor into their social and cognitive development, I find the role of a teacher to be quite critical. The thing that possibly excites me the most about being a future educator is the positive impact that the students and I can have on each others lives as we grow, have fun, and learn together. Undoubtedly, there will be challenges, but I see these moments serving as great learning experiences. My hope is to help inspire students, as I know they will certainly be inspiring me.
