I am so appreciative of the all the experiences I have had in the grade two classroom. Regardless of whether they seem negative or positive, I know they are all truly positive because it will help me become a better teacher.
A miss:
1. I assumed I would see tears coming from this age group, and yes, I most definitely have! Initially, dealing with tears is something I felt would make me uncomfortable. So, I certainly consider it a privilege to watch my TA handle these situations whenever they happen to arise. Already, I feel like I have learned so much and I know I can only improve over time.
The hits:
1.Last week, I found I was able to make a connection with a student that seems to stick out quite a bit from the rest of the class. This student tends to have difficulty settling down and concentrating on the task at hand. So, to make a connection with him seemed like a great break-through on a personal level. Also, I found it incredibly helpful to get him started on the assignment and to remain focused. I found making this connection with this student was quite simple when remembering a great tip from my TA: to connect and understand the students, we need to step into their world.
2. I’ve also had the benefit of working one-on-one with a student that struggles with literacy. Although, he struggles greatly, he perseveres and maintains a calm and positive attitude. This amazes me because I feel like people often give up with such difficult struggles at any given age. This is one of the reasons that I want to be a teacher, because I feel like they can teach me, as I teach them
3. After helping students with various stages of assignments or tasks, several students eagerly showed me their work before handing it into the teacher. This makes me feel like I am doing my job when they have beaming smiles on their faces because I have not only helped them understand the lesson, but they have enjoyed it as well.
I am so grateful for all these listed experiences and more. I have learned so much and am excited for what’s ahead!
